So not HaPpY...

Apologies in advance, it is not like me to complain on my little blog really
but I'm shocked & fed up

* * *

As some of you know, I am trying (very slowly) to build up my stock of DMC threads.
Basically, I go through the official list and buy the numbers I haven't got
so that I have the whole collection!

Stitcher will know exactly what I'm on about, so I'm not going to worry
if this is insane or mad :D

* * *

So yesterday I visited my LNS (Hobby Craft, for the UK reader).
It is not the best shop for cross stitching as they only sell kits but
for ribbon, buttons & threads, you can find the basics.

So, I had my list and bought 16 skeins of DMC I didn't have.
I was quite happy & in a sad way,
quite looking forward to some "bobbinating"
(yep, it comes with the territory when you are a stitcher!)
until I arrived at home & checked the receipt...

What??
£0.90 per skein??
It used to be £0.80 a few weeks ago!!

I always found it expensive, but really? Nearly £1!!

How come in USA you can have the same product for $ 0.40???
I mean the stuff is made in France and UK is just next door...

Am I the only one to think 90p is dear for a skein of floss?

* * *

Well, let's just say my LNS won't be seeing me in a hurry and
I might place a bulk order from the USA instead!
What a rip off :(

Okay, rant over.... apologies to everyone
I feel better already for sharing my frustration with you all :D
Aren't you lucky?

* * *

An other little issue I'm having at the moment too,
I can't seem to settle on a project.

I have 2 Halloween smalls that are now gathering dust somewhere,
2 Christmas smalls that I don't feel tempted to finish for now,
my mum's big project that I really wanted to finish for Christmas... which could be for next year now!

What is wrong with me??
I want to stitch but don't know what to stitch
and seem to be losing interest half way through a project.

Any advice?? for Mii?

  1. Hi Mii, wow 90p per skein! I don't understand why floss is so much more expensive here than in the US. I buy mine online from Sew and So and they cost 69p a skein. I've never had any problems with delivery except for my latest order which seems to have got lost in the post! They have offered to replace it though if it hasn't arrived within 10 days, which is great customer service.
I was exactly the same as you last night! I think we need a new start each....

    1. Hi Justine, yes I regularly order my fabric from Sewandso and they are really good.
I had just 2 issues with them and they sorted them out efficiently & without troubles.
I agree, I definitely think we need a new start! :D Which one though?... Decisions, decisions. Let me know if you fancy a SAL, who knows, we might have a common chart in our stash :)

  2. Hello Miistitch

First of all you have a lovely blog. I'm new to blogging so I'm enjoying a bit of blog hopping.

I agree that Hobbycraft are way to expensive and our branch never has the colours you want anyway! Like Justine I now buy mine from Sewandso.
I hope your stitching mojo comes back quickly (:

  3. OH MY!!
I buy.. well actually Jon sources my DMC threads from here www.Leisurecraft-tewkesbury.com they are 38 p per 8 metre bobins.... There is a minimum order of £10 and they provide a quick efficient service. I use them all the time... and like you have been trying to put together a DMC collection! One day I will get there!
Oh my must be something in the air!! I too am having a hard time deciding what project to start!

  4. This will cheer you up no end and I class it as my good deed for the day.....
I always buy my skeins of floss from Cross Stitch Heaven for 39p each! They are genuine DMC and always arrive promptly, neatly packaged and with very cheap postage. Their plain fabric is reasonably priced too. Go check out the site and feel happy that you will never have to pay 90p per skein again!
As for your other dilemma, I concur with Justine - start something new! :)

I hope this is just temporary

  5. Mii, I can empathize with you .... here in Canada we pay dearly for DMC floss, too. I can buy it from the US but when our dollar is low-valued the exchange rate ups the price and then there is the cost of postage. I've been learning to make-do with what I have and consequently lots of substitutions take place for my stitching. You'll get your stitching mo-jo back soon. ^^

I never thought you would have a similar issue in Canada. I just assumed prices were like in the US. This is mad really!!
Some of the girls have suggested various online shops, so I will have a little look.
Hope the stitching bug can make its mind up on one project! :D

    2. Kate, you should get your DMC thread from Michaels if you have one near you. They have the lowest cost of DMC thread at less than 50 cents per. Plus if you use their coupons when you have to buy a huge amount you save more as well.

  6. Sai?
    Ti capisco!

    1. Thanks Irene. I bought some charts from the USA and had to pay extra customs fee but it was still cheaper than buying them in the UK, so I didn't mind.
I followed Rachel's advice & just ordered some floss at 39p... in UK :D I'm so happy and looking forward to receive my order.

Yes, stitching friends are the best & they came to the rescue with plenty of places to shop (which I did... at 39p per skein, I am so so happy now!!).
I have started something really small and still I'm bored with it already...

  8. Oh dear Mii....that does sound like a rip off! I pay about half that out here in South Africa!!! And I thought we were pricey!
We stitch for the love of stitching....and if its feeling too much like a chore and you have to force yourself to do it...or you don't feel like working the projects you have at the moment....then put them aside and do something that gives you joy-even if it isn't a stitchy thing! You'll go back to those other bits eventually :)

As everything else was so expensive in the States I never thought of looking for DMC in summer (thinking too that they are bound to be more expensive there than in Europe) I am not stitching at the moment either but doing other things!AriadnefromGreece!

  19. I know its very odd. Manufacturers/dealers look for more profit. There are many yarn manufacturers in India who export everything and I feel so helpless when I see that I will have to pay higher cost with import duty and sometimes customs too to get the same product that was made here.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I do believe it is because the US don't have the same/strict manufacturing rules hence why in Europe some numbers have been redone to comply with regulations but in the US they just sell both. The threads from the US have a only to be sold within the US or outside the EU (can't quite remember) on the label. I was in a shop in France once and they had some gorgeous stitchy products like single napkins, bibs, little bears, birth book covers...really wish you could get stuff like that in the UK.

  28. I buy all my thread from Cross Stitch Heaven, Donna is really nice and I really can't complain. When I've needed a lot (for a HAED or similar chart) I tend to buy from the US and get them shipped over. I have a lovely lady who acts as a "floss fairy" for me and buys them when they are on sale and even with the postage costs it still works out cheaper.

I know how you must feel, it's so frustrating that they are made in France yet cost us so much more.

  29. DMC's products are always expensive than Anchor' s! Therefore, I mostly prefer to use Anchor's threads!

This is entirely due to the decrease in world cotton and silk production. For instance, cotton cultivation is reduced or banned in many countries such as mine! Therefore we pay more!

  30. Lucky you living in the UK, here in Austria we pay €1.80 in a local needlework shop. I always check very carefully, which numbers I really need and use up even the shortest lengths for small projects. I often buy from the UK or the US, because the difference in cost always is higher than the shipping costs for a bigger project. I would really like to support my LNS, but I have to keep my budget in mind, too ... :-((

  33. One Of the reasons America is cheap is because of VAT, the other is apparently due to a treaty made at the end of the Second World War to encourage American stores to stock products from France to try rebuild their economy. I don't know if this is true but it's an interesting story!
I try to buy thread online from places like Cross Stitch Heaven or I ask an American friend to send them in exchange for British magazines.
The stores in the US cannot legally sell threads to you, that's why they are stamped "for sale outside the EU only"

So, I'm glad I've discovered Cross Stitch Heaven!!! 39p per skein is a real bargain... I have no idea how she can do it! And I gave up on the idea to become a stockist, so not worth it...
